AbstractSpecular reflection appears as a bright spot or highlight on any smooth glossy convex surface and is caused by a near mirror-like reflectance off the surface. Convex shapes always provide the ideal geometry for highlights, areas of very strong reflectance, regardless of the orientation of the surface or position of the receiver. Despite highlights and glossy appearance being common in chemically defended insects, their potential signalling function is unknown. The energy absorbed from the radio-frequency fields of mobile telephones depends strongly on distance from the source. The authors' objective in this study was to evaluate whether gliomas occur preferentially in the areas of the brain having the highest radio-frequency exposure. The authors used 2 approaches: In a case-case analysis, tumor locations were compared with varying exposure levels; in a case-specular analysis, a hypothetical reference location was assigned for each glioma, and the distances from the actual and specular locations to the handset were compared. A prototype RGB imaging system for mapping of skin chromophores consists of a commercial RGB CMOS sensor, RGB LEDs ring-light illuminator and orthogonally orientated polarizers for reducing specular reflectance. The system was used for monitoring of vascular malformations (hemagiomas and telangiectasias) therapy.
Detection of local specular gloss and surface roughness from black prints

A combination of optical and tomographic imaging techniques for inspection of local surface roughness and specular gloss of black prints and coated paper are introduced. A diffractive optical-element-based glossmeter (DOG) and a low-coherence interferometer (LCI) were used to obtain local information about the print in terms of topographic and gloss maps. X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) was used to obtain 3D local structural information of the coated paper. Granulometric analysis of corneal endothelium specular images by using a germ–grain model

Specular microscopy is widely used to study the human corneal endothelium status in vivo. In this paper, the corneal endothelium is represented as a binary image composed of the cell inscribed circles. The granulometric distribution function of the complement of this image is used as a functional descriptor, which provides information about the shape, size and spatial arrangement of cells. Experimental evaluation using bootstrap techniques shows its ability to discriminate between controls and pathological cases. Abstract As Stern–Gerlach type spin filters do not work with electrons, spin analysis of electron beams is accomplished by spin-dependent scattering processes based on spin–orbit or exchange interaction. Existing polarimeters are single-channel devices characterized by an inherently low figure of merit (FoM) of typically 10 −4 –10 −3 . Robotics applications in urban environments are subject to obstacles that exhibit specular reflections hampering autonomous navigation. On the other hand, these reflections are highly polarized and this extra information can successfully be used to segment the specular areas. In nature, polarized light is obtained by reflection or scattering. RGB imaging system for mapping and monitoring of hemoglobin distribution in skin

A prototype R-G-B imaging system for mapping of skin hemoglobin distribution has been designed and tested. Device basically consists of a commercial RGB sensor (CMOS, max. frame rate 87 fps for VGA resolution), RGB LED ringlight illuminator and orthogonally orientated polarizers for reducing specular reflectance. The system was examined for monitoring of hemoglobin concentration changes during specific provocations - arterial/venous occlusions and heat test. Hemoglobin distribution maps of several skin malformations were obtained, as well.
Active Lighting Applied to Shape from Polarization

We present a new way of solving the ambiguity that appears in the shape from polarization method. This ambiguity, concerning the normals orientation of the surface, was previously solved thanks to a propagation algorithm. In this paper, the ambiguity is solved thanks to a special active lighting. This method is less time computing and is more robust to noise acquisition. We first demonstrate how to compute the right normals on the whole surface. Then, we show an application on the 3D reconstruction of a specular metallic object made by stamping and polishing.
A common optical algorithm for the evaluation of specular spin polarized neutron and Mössbauer reflectivities

Using the general approach of Lax for multiple scattering of waves a 2x2 covariant expression for the reflectivity of polarized slow neutrons of a magnetic layer structure of arbitrary complexity is given including polarization effects of the external magnetic field. The present formalism is identical to the earlier published one for the (nuclear) resonant X-ray (Mossbauer) reflectivity and properly takes the effect of the external magnetic field of arbitrary direction on the neutron beam into account. The form of the reflectivity matrix allows for an efficient numerical calculation.
